Grade ten students at schools in the province of Ontario were subjected to literacy tests in October of 2000 (when these photographs were taken). This was one of many new implementations by former premier of Ontario, the dastardly Mike Harris. I was still in school at the time, and for the two mornings of the literacy tests, I knew I wanted to do something productive while the tests were taking place.
On the first of the two mornings, I walked from my school to the old Whitby Psychiatric Hospital. At the time, I had never been into building #28 (the recreation hall) or the tunnels beneath the old Psych.
When I arrived at building #5, the closest building to #28, I found the doors boarded up and without an easy means of entry. Assuming there was a reason for this, I left the building and spent the rest of the morning taking photographs of the exteriors of several buildings.
